Firefox 92 browser will try again to support AVIF images by default

Mozilla is trying again to enable AVIF image decoding support by default in the Firefox web browser. AVIF is a promising image file format based on the use of AV1 in the HEIF file format. AVIF 1.0 was confirmed in early 2019. It supports multiple color spaces, lossy and lossless compression methods, supports up to 12-bit color depth, supports movie particles, etc. It uses HEIF as a container and AV1 frames.

Since last year, Google Browser has fully supported AVIF images, as well as providing support in WebKit and other browser engines and other desktop software and libraries. A few months ago, the Firefox browser tried to enable AVIF by default, but due to some problems left over during the development process, this improvement was eventually withdrawn before the release.

Before the release of Firefox 92 next month, Mozilla engineers hope to enable AVIF support by default this time. At the same time, engineers also added some color space support for AVIF in Firefox. If the problem does not recur before the last minute of the release, Firefox 92 should appear around September 7.
