GTA 5 map entirely 3D printed down to the smallest detail

An enthusiast has recreated and 3D printed what is perhaps the most spectacular model of the GTA 5 map, made up of 24 different pieces joined together, each representing 2km square of surface in the game, and created from around one kilogram of recycled plastic. The idea was initially to make a 3D printed version of the map of Red Dead Redemption 2 but the morphological peculiarities of the setting of the Rockstar Games western suggested making the first experiment with GTA 5.

To collect the game’s topographical data, Dom Riccobene used a script that allowed him to obtain data from the terrain below while flying over it using a mod that gives him full access to the camera. A second mod instead allowed him to remove the water, so as to also have all the references of the land hidden under the bodies of water.

Once obtained, the data were used to extract the GPS coordinates and then prepare the models to be printed. Each of the 24 pieces took between an hour and a half and two hours to create, for a total of 125 hours of work for the 3D printer in addition to another 300 hours of data collection and processing.

After having dedicated himself to the best-selling game ever, the enthusiast will therefore try to recreate the map of Red Dead Redemption 2, including all the rocks and trees, according to what was declared to GamesRadar. Other possible objects of his attention will be The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
