Firefox 92 Beta release brings AVIF image default support again

With the release of the official version of Mozilla Firefox 91 this week, the Beta test version of Firefox 92 is also coming as scheduled, in order to conduct extensive testing of the next browser that will be released in September. What excites us most about the Firefox 92 beta is that it supports AVIF images by default. In the previous version, Mozilla tried to support it but later withdrew due to technical reasons.

Now, Mozilla developers believe that their AVIF support now has a good foundation and is ready to launch in Firefox 92. The AVIF image format is based on the open-source, royalty-free AV1 video codec. The AV1 image file format supports lossy and lossless compression, multiple color depths, image transparency, HDR support, and other modern features. Google started supporting AVIF in the Chrome browser last year, and various other applications have also supported this image specification, but Mozilla has not joined it for a long time.

The Firefox 92 beta released this week enabled cross-platform AVIF by default. Website developers and operators are usually attracted by AVIF because it can save more bandwidth. This week’s Firefox 92 beta also supports processing more PDF forms in its PDF browser, various macOS-specific improvements, redesigned certificate error pages, and other improvements.
