Google tests an app launcher on Nest Hub Max

Officially, the apps on the Nest Hub Max smart display are known as Google Actions and previously it was possible to open them with a voice command such as Open YouTube or via the suggestion card of that service. Google is now testing an app drawer-like grid of icons that can be accessed by swiping up from the bottom or outside of the screen.

In the bottom bar are still settings to adjust brightness, volume, disable the camera (on Hub Max) and see full preferences, but there is now a row of circular icons above it as well. Six shortcuts are shown by default, while on the far right is a See All button that switches to full-screen view.

It is interesting that none of the proprietary apps are placed side by side with Google in the name, while those of third parties are presumably shown based on which services the user has connected. The app launcher on Nest Hub Max is presumably still the first test, considering that the person who recorded the video is having trouble bringing up the bottom sheet, and the experiment doesn’t seem to be widely implemented on the devices yet.
