Do you prefer your favorite app in English or in another language? You can set the language of apps on the iPhone, iPad and Mac yourself. This way you can adjust the preferred language of your favorite apps.
Set Language Per App
Some apps offer an option in the settings to choose a different language. Apps that don’t have that usually rely on your language option set in your system settings. You can also set the language per-app yourself, directly via the settings of your device. Then you only adjust the language of that app, while the rest of your system remains unaffected.
Change app language on an iPhone or iPad
Choosing another language from your favorite app is a breeze. We’ll start with the explanation for your iPhone and iPad. Later in this article, we’ll explain the Mac. Follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and choose the app for which you want to change the language.
- If available, tap Language.
- Now choose one of the available languages.
- The app will now be displayed in the chosen language.
It is not possible to change the language of several default apps, including Contacts, Messages and Phones. For apps from the App Store, the available languages depend on the language the developer has added to the app. For example, if Dutch has not been added, but German and English have been added, those are your only options. Can’t see the option in the Settings app? Then check the settings of the app itself if there is a language option built-in.
Change language of Mac programs
You can also set the language per app on the Mac. It is possible to adjust all standard apps here. The changes apply to the entire app, including any pop-ups and the menu bar. This is how you set it up:
- Open the System Preferences ( > System Preferences).
- Click Language & Region and open the Apps tab at the top of that window.
- Click the plus sign at the bottom left and choose an app from the list.
- Select a language from the list of languages. You can also click if the text is gray.
The changes will be visible when you restart the app in question. You will also receive a notification if the app is currently open. Optionally, you can change the language of an app at a later time without having to add it to the list again. Click on the app and a menu will appear.
