Chrome OS Office applications will stop supporting next month

According to the latest news, Microsoft officially announced today that it will stop supporting the Android Office suite apps on the Chrome OS system, including Outlook, starting on September 18. After these applications stop supporting, Microsoft hopes that users will switch to the web version of the application to get the most optimized experience.

Microsoft Office applications landed on Android as early as 2015, including Word, Excel, OneNote, Outlook and so on. Microsoft said that only applications on the Chrome OS system will stop supporting, but the Office App on Android smartphones will still be supported and updated normally and will not be affected.

Microsoft said in an official statement that users of Office and Outlook on the Chrome OS platform can switch to the Office.com and Outlook.com websites in order to use more additional and advanced features. Users need to log in with a Microsoft account or a Microsoft 365 linked account.

The biggest drawback of this change is that it cannot be used offline. Although some applications of Microsoft Office provide a PWA version, you still need to use the browser to use some functions. Microsoft also said before that it will unify Outlook applications on multiple platforms such as Windows and macOS and all shift to the web version. This can not only reduce system pressure but also ensure that the operating habits of different platforms are the same.
