This is how you reduce the data consumption of the Twitter Android App

Apps like Twitter can make a significant dent in your mobile data bundle. Especially when videos come into play, the data consumption increases quickly. Fortunately, Twitter has built-in several data saving options for its users, in this article, we walk you through all the steps to reduce the data usage of Twitter on Android.

With auto-playing videos and relatively sharp images, using Twitter can in the worst case lead to an extra bill on top of your standard data plan. Twitter offers several options in its settings menu to reduce data usage. For example, you can choose that a video should no longer be played automatically, or that an image should be displayed at low quality.

You can also choose to automatically play videos only on Wi-Fi networks or to display images in high quality only via Wi-Fi. In this way, the data bundle is saved; however, that will not always be the solution. Sometimes Wi-Fi networks are not fast enough to handle the highest quality settings. Fortunately, Twitter has an option for that so that you can have the app immediately turn on all data-saving functions. Below we explain the steps to reduce data consumption.

How it Works

The steps below always work for the Twitter app for Android but are largely the same for the iOS version of Twitter.

  • Open the Twitter app
  • Click on the hamburger menu icon at the top left
  • Navigate to Settings & Privacy
  • Under General on Data Usage
  • Check the box behind Limit data usage

After the box is checked, Twitter immediately starts saving data. A restart of the app is not necessary for the data saving to take effect. If you don’t save with both video and image, you can also choose not to check the box next to ‘Restrict data usage’ and choose the other data saving options that Twitter offers.
