Beware of some dangerous apps on the Google Play Store

In the sea of applications and games available on the Google Play Store, it is always possible to find dangerous software or, in any case, capable of creating annoyances and this regardless of the enormous commitment made by the Mountain View giant to check the quality and safety of the apps. that are published on the platform.

And so, from time to time, someone manages to pierce the defenses of Google and the reports of users who encounter security problems, applications that download others and the like begin to follow one another.

Well, this is what is happening with some games and applications (mostly developed in China) and which, according to what is learned, are able to download and install other applications without the need for users to give their permission.

On the Google Play Store a new danger

An example of these applications is a rather popular weather app, which seems to be able to independently replace the launcher with a similar one (but full of invasive pop-ups) and install other apps.

Many have therefore wondered how this can happen, especially considering that the permissions system designed by Google should not allow apps to lead to the installation of others without the user’s permission.

After the first investigations, it emerged that the problem is to be found in the software called DSP Digital Turbine, which is a solution used by many smartphone manufacturers (such as Samsung, Xiaomi and Motorola ) and various telephone operators to manage the initial configuration of the device and install some applications at the first power on without the user’s permission and which is installed directly in the firmware of the Android device.

Apparently, some applications have managed to bypass Digital Turbine’s protections and use its SDK to take possession of the smartphone and install other apps. The Digital Turbine team has already set to work to be able to track down the problem and find a solution. In the meantime, to avoid nasty surprises, the advice is to read the comments left by other users on the Google Play Store before installing new applications.
