Canonical announced the launch of the Ubuntu 22.01 Jammy Jellyfish LTS development project

With Canonical officially opening the Jammy archive today, it means that the Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish long-term support version (LTS) development project has also been officially put on the agenda. If all goes well, the new LTS version will arrive on April 21, 2021. At present, the Jammy archive has been opened to developers and is automatically synchronized with Debian.

Coming with Ubuntu 22.04, including Python 3.10 and OpenSSL 3.0. In the next six months, the LTS version also plans to introduce PHP 8.1, Ruby 3.0, GNOME 42.0, and various other software update packages.

Fortunately, Canonical jumped from GNOME Shell 40 to 42 in this LTS cycle (instead of the recently released GNOME 41), which means that the official release of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS next year will be equipped with the latest GNOME desktop components.

At the same time, Mesa 22.0 is also expected to become a part of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, which will receive new open-source graphics driver support. As for the kernel, even if the latest Linux 5.17 is not available, at least there is Linux 5.16 + the latest hardware support/underlying improvements.

Unfortunately, according to tradition, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is likely to stick to GCC 11 as the code compiler – even if GCC 12 is about to be released in April next year. So before the release of XX.10, don’t expect a major version update of the GCC compiler that comes with the system.

If the state of the new Ubuntu desktop installer currently under development is good enough, Canonical should also designate it as the default installer for 22.04 LTS, but it will ultimately depend on whether it matures in the next 6 months.
