Google Fiber launches 2Gbps fiber optic broadband in San Antonio, Texas

Google announced that it is launching a 2 Gigabit fiber-optic Internet service in San Antonio, Texas. Customers in some areas of the active service area can now register for Google’s 2000Mbps service for $100 per month, as well as up to 1000Mbps uplink speed. Compared with competitors, Google’s service is more attractive because it does not set a data limit.

Google’s new service also has no annual contract restrictions, and a monthly payment of $100 includes installation and required equipment. The company is currently studying the technical requirements to roll out 2000Mbps services in more areas of its San Antonio network.

Currently, the new service is available to residents of some areas in the west, east, north, and northwest of San Antonio. This service can be used for families, people living in apartments or condominiums, and the San Antonio Medical Center area. Construction workers are expanding service availability in the Northeast, Northwest, and Inner West areas, including the Leon Valley, Saint Mary University, Stone Oak and Encino areas.

Google said that once these areas are completed, it will begin to expand its services to other communities in the southwest. The search giant also pointed out that since launching the service in San Antonio four years ago, it has partnered with local organizations to address digital fairness and inclusiveness in the city. In addition, Google announced the expansion of its support for the Washing and Learning Project of Library Without Borders, extending its service to the second laundry shop.

Google said it expects 2021 to be the largest construction year in San Antonio since the launch of its network. Google invites citizens of San Antonio to register on its email list to get the latest information on availability in their area.
