Google released Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro with Tensor processor and new camera hardware

Google announced all the details of Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro at today’s Pixel autumn conference. The biggest change in this new flagship phone is the updated camera module. Pixel 6 marks the most radical change in the history of Google’s flagship device-and it is also its most serious attempt to compete with Samsung and Apple. The company let us see this device for the first time in August. The first is the surprisingly complete appearance of the device. It uses the self-developed chip Tensor for the first time to get rid of the dependence on Qualcomm.

Pixel 6 uses a 6.4-inch FHD+ OLED screen with a pixel density of 411ppi. The Pro model’s screen has been upgraded to 6.7-inch QHD+ with a pixel of 512411ppi and a refresh rate of 90 and 120 Hz, respectively. It is protected by a Gorilla Glass Victus cover with curved edges. The rear of the fuselage is covered by Gorilla 6-generation glass, and there is a large and unique camera strip, laying along with the top third. This is a large enough protrusion so that the back of the phone is at an angle when it is placed on the desktop.

It can be flush with the desktop unless it is installed in the phone case. The tones above and below the camera bar are slightly different, in order to inject more color into the device. Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are equipped with GoogleTensor processors. Both have a Titan M2 security coprocessor inside, with end-to-end security designed by Google. Titan M2 security coprocessor, security core and Trusty (trusted execution environment).

Both devices have a security update guarantee for at least 5 years, as well as Android system intelligence, a private computing core, and automatic security checks and privacy controls. Google first talked about Tensor earlier this summer. It provides support for artificial intelligence on all devices of the mobile phone. It is basically Google’s own AI/ML accelerator, plus relatively ready-made Arm CPU and GPU cores, as well as Google’s new Titan 2 security core.

Google promises that Tensor will provide chips that are 80% faster than Pixel 5. To be fair, Pixel 5 is more like a mid-range phone, but it still feels very smooth in daily use. However, what we know from these early leaks is that Tensor is driven by two Arm Cortex-X1 chips, which is Arm’s flagship mobile design for performance. In contrast, Snapdragon 888 is equipped with only one of them.

As with modern SoC conventions, Tensor processors are also designed with lower performance and battery-saving cores. There are rumors that these are a mixture of the old A76-based core and the recent super-efficient A55 core, but Google itself has kept completely silent on these details, which also makes sense because the company wants to focus all its energy on this. The artificial intelligence capabilities of the system.

In fact, at today’s press conference, Google’s Rick Osterloh emphasized these artificial intelligence experiences, from live translation to mobile phone photo and video functions. The Pixel phone has been the champion of smartphone photography since its inception for some time before, but Google seems to be content with the status quo. From Pixel 3 to Pixel 5 and 5A, they all use the same 12.2-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor, which is far behind by competitors. In the back, even once only stayed in the mid-range product field and was tepid.

The focus on camera hardware is itself a change for the company. For a long time, Google has been very optimistic about computational photography, so much so that it hints that the quality of the hardware is almost a meaningless question. Maybe someday in the future, someone can come up with a convincing version, artificial intelligence and ML can complete most or all of the optimization. However, for now, the camera hardware is still very important.

Now, the main cameras of Pixel 6 and 6 Pro both use a 50-megapixel sensor, which can decompose the image into 12.5 million-pixel output. The new generation of camera modules can capture 150% more light than Pixel 5. In addition to the main camera, both Pixels are equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor with ultra-wide-angle lens, while the 6 Pro adds a third telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom and 48-megapixel resolution. On the front, the selfie camera of Pixel 6 is 8MP and the field of view is 84 degrees, while the camera of 6 Pro is 11.1MP and the field of view is 94 degrees.

The configuration of the rear camera module is very different from the previous Pixel. Google’s proud software optimization capabilities can be used more effectively here, and it also brings new features to Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. The most interesting new features are true tones, sports mode, magic eraser and facial blur removal. The latter is almost as it sounds, sharpening the subject’s face after shooting.

The motion mode is similar to the portrait mode, creating a motion blur around the moving subject. Magic Eraser uses tools similar to Photoshop to remove unwanted objects from the background of the photo, and artificial intelligence fills in the blanks. At the same time, the real tone is to take better photos of the subject, regardless of the skin tone-so far, this feature has been severely lacking on smartphones.

Google claims that its redesigned portrait mode can better present the different skin tones of a wider and more diverse population. Google calls it Face Unblur and uses multiple images recorded each time the shutter is pressed to keep the face clear, even when shooting sports. Sports mode is designed for capturing action shots and long exposures, such as car light streaks in night scenes, or panning with a moving subject to blur the background and give people a sense of speed.

Finally, the Magic Eraser function will try to remove interfering objects in Google photos. You probably remember that Google demonstrated the automatic object removal function at the 2017 Google I/O conference, but it never entered the device and seemed to be forgotten. After many years, this function returned with the latest hardware.

Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro include a fast in-screen fingerprint reader and various first-party software used on Pixel devices. In terms of the wiping system, Material You explored a more user-friendly design method. Without compromising the functional foundation of our application, Material You tries to create a personalized design suitable for every style, meet every need, and provide vitality and adaptability for every screen.

Call assistance is also a new feature, which, like Duplex, aims to open up the interaction between humans and devices. Direct My Call uses Google’s transcription function to directly display the text version of the call. At the same time, Waiting for me supports continuous waiting on the phone and notifies you when someone answers. There is also an improved assistant voice typing function. Saying Hey Google, Type will use an assistant to dictate the text. Saying Stop will turn off the feature, and saying Send will send a message. You can even spell difficult words letter by letter and dictate emoticons.

Google also solved some battery problems that plagued earlier models for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The battery capacity of the 6 and 6 Pro are 4614 and 5003mAh respectively, which is a good improvement compared with the 4080mAh of the Pixel 5. A single charge can provide about 24 hours of battery life, if you turn on the battery saving mode, the battery life is almost twice as long. Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are fast-charged on-board through a 30W USB-C plug (sold separately), which can be charged to half the power in half an hour, and both support wireless charging via Qi.

Pixel 6 has 8GB RAM and 128/256GB storage space options, Pro has 12GB RAM with 128, 256, 512GB storage options. Although the performance of the device has been greatly improved compared to the previous generation, the company still managed to keep the price low, starting at $599 for the Pixel 6 and $899 for the Pixel 6 Pro. They are now available for pre-order and are scheduled to go on sale on October 28.
