Google only promises to provide three-year system + two-year security update support for Pixel 6

Android Police reported that Google’s commitment to updating the Pixel 6 series of smartphones is not as strong as we expected. Although fulfilling the promise of a “five-year update”, only the first three years were major Android version updates (to Android 15 in October 2024), and the next two years were pure security patches.

Although Google’s official measures are very pleasant, looking back at history, it’s so-called at least can only extend this commitment by a few months at most. In contrast, Apple’s support for system updates and security patches for iOS devices is much longer. In addition, for reference, Pixel 5 and all currently supported Pixel devices also enjoy a standard three-year system update commitment.

In other words, Google is just quite opportunistic to extend the security patch for the Pixel 6/6 Pro models for two years. Even thanks to the Tensor chip, Google has gone deeper into the hardware level of the device. But from the current known actions, the company is not trying to extend the update support period of Pixel devices as we expected.
