Taste of modding for Pixel 6 and 6 Pro with the first custom kernel

Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro have recently arrived on the market – in Italy not yet, but it is still possible to buy them – but, to the delight of enthusiasts, they have already opened up to modding: the first custom kernel is available for new smartphones Made by Google.

In the last few days, we have talked about the Google Pixel 6 due to some bugs, an interesting function and the official wallpapers. Today, however, we see a novelty dedicated to modding enthusiasts and users who want to have extra control over their smartphones.

The kernel, in an extremely simplified way, is that component of the software that acts as a bridge between the operating system and all applications on one side and the device hardware on the other. In fact, the kernel comes into play in any activity performed with the device.

Well, after Google had promptly released the factory images of Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro, as well as device tree and kernel source code, the user and contributor of XDA Developers Freak07 made available the first custom kernel for the pair of Big G’s reference smartphone.

For Pixel 6 owners who appreciate modding, this is great news. The only downside is that at the moment the Kirisakura kernel is only available as a preview build with minimal features, but its development will continue. Due to some changes made to the Generic Kernel Image (GKI), the flash of this custom kernel must be done as a series of images, not as a single ZIP file via TWRP.

In short, if you are not fully aware of what you are doing, it is best to leave it alone. There are good reasons to avoid modding immediately with a smartphone, even premium, just launched there would be several (starting from the fact that unlocking the bootloader prevents the functioning of apps that require a SafetyNet pass). However, if you are curious, all the necessary files are available at this link.
