TikTok unblocked in Pakistan

Pakistani media supervision authority lifted the ban on TikTok again on Friday after a lapse of four months. TikTok has previously promised that it will control the spread of indecent content. This is the fourth time that the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority has implemented and lifted such a ban on TikTok in the past 15 months.

In October 2020, Pakistan banned TikTok for the first time because the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority received a wide range of complaints reporting immoral, obscene and vulgar content on the TikTok app. The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority stated in a statement on Twitter that TikTok has assured them that it will also block users who upload illegal content.

TikTok’s parent company is ByteDance, which has nearly 39 million downloads in Pakistan and is very popular among teenagers and young people. Pakistan has been urging TikTok to develop an effective mechanism to control illegal content. Over the years, Pakistan has also forwarded hundreds of content complaints to Facebook and Twitter, claiming that this content is offensive.
