Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, full speed ahead with modding and augmented reality

Pixel 6 Pro

Pixel 6 Pro

The Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro continue to mature, both officially and in the world of modding: in the meantime, they are included in the list of devices supported by the ARCore augmented reality platform, and then they receive the first experimental builds of GrapheneOS, a custom ROM based on Android that focuses on privacy and security. For those who prefer a more refined ROM from the graphics point of view, however, ProtonAOSP is also coming.

GRAPHENEOS: PRIME BUILD EXPERIMENTAL

The builds of this custom ROM have actually been available for some time, but so far they were labeled as highly experimental, the most unstable category in the nomenclature adopted by its developers. They now feel confident enough to just switch to experimental. The ROM installation can be done directly from the dedicated website, the link to which is available below.

GrapheneOS is based on Android 12 and claims to provide even more robust security features than the stock AOSP system – from app runtime to sandbox to the kernel to memory allocation routines to boot process to the filesystem. GrapheneOS is a relatively new name, but the project has been around since 2014, although it has received several name changes in the meantime.

PROTONAOSP: PRIME BUILD FOR PATREON

The builds for both of Google’s new generation smartphones have already been available for download for subscribers on Patreon for a few days. Developer kdrag0n, one of the big names in the current Android modding scene, says the support is full and stable. Compared to stock Android, ProtonAOSP promises:

ProtonAOSP can also be installed via web installer. The latest version, 12.1.0, is only available for Patreon supporters. There are previous versions always based on Android 12 (12.0.0) and also based on Android 11 freely accessible, but 12.1.0 is the only one compatible with Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. The custom ROM is dedicated only to devices Made by Google – those based on Android 12 for example support Pixel 4 onwards, while those based on Android 11 also add Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL (for some reason no Pixel 3, 3 XL, 3a or 3a XL).

PIXEL 6 AND 6 PRO ADDED TO ARCORE TOGETHER WITH MANY OTHERS

As we know, Google has shown that it wants to get serious in the field of augmented reality: during the I/O conference this spring, the company announced many new advanced features that will guarantee even more precision in the fusion between the real and virtual world. Together with Pixel 6 and 6 Pro in the list of supported smartphones are added 24 other devices, including smartphones and tablets, including several Motorola, Xiaomi and the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro which for a few hours has been allowing you to test Android 12L. The full list is as follows:
