Some Tesla owners have discovered new features that can detect tire wear and tread depth

According to the latest report, Tesla is known for adding new features through free over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Most of the time, these new features are included in the release notes, but sometimes the automaker will quietly add something without including it in the release notes.

This is the case with a new feature discovered last weekend. Some Tesla owners have found that this function can show whether the tires are worn and whether the tread depth is too low.

According to photos shared by some car owners, a new error message will appear on the car’s central control screen to warn of possible problems with the car. It also recommends that car owners arrange a service appointment for tire inspection and swapping.

The question after seeing this new feature is naturally how can a car measure the depth of a vehicle’s tread? People may not notice the difference visually, but when a tire’s tread depth is too low, it becomes smaller. When this happens, the tire starts to spin faster than when it was new.

What Tesla may be doing is measuring the number of rotations of the wheel. Once it reaches a certain level, it knows that the tire’s tread depth is too low. Similarly, if one tire spins faster than the other, it will also know whether the tread wear is uneven.

According to the owner who shared this new information with DriveTeslaCanada, this new feature is part of the 2021.44.5 software update.
