Pixel widget notifies local storm everywhere, Google stops all alerts

Obviously, it was not as simple as it might have been initially believed, to solve the problem that occurred with the At a Glance widget of the Pixels. In recent days, users from all over the world have been warned of the imminent arrival of a storm through the widget, but the report was issued by PAGASA, a Philippine government agency that deals with atmospheric, geophysical and astronomical services.

The information shown on the home screen by a widget that in Italian we would call at a glance is useful information if it were not that – in fact – it should have had a geographically limited scope and therefore concern the inhabitants of the Philippines, and not those from other parts of the world who had little to do with the storm. The notice issued erroneously by At a Glance – also in Italy, as you reported in the comments of an article – had an important resonance, so much so that Google intervened.

Not decisively, but with a buffer solution. According to some reports, by accessing the widget settings under the summary item, the weather warnings are now disabled by default even if they were previously active. Tapping the switch apparently activates them again, but on exiting the widget settings and re-entering later many have noticed that the switch is in the off position again.

In fact, Google has “solved” the problem by forcing the deactivation of weather warnings, without remedying the error that showed everyone the arrival of the storm. For the time being, therefore, false alarms will no longer be able to arrive, but not even well-founded ones. The possibility of receiving timely information on adverse weather conditions is intuitively important (think of the case of the tornado that hit an Amazon warehouse ): the hope is that the indiscriminate stop is momentary and aimed at identifying the causes that triggered the error. so as to solve it.
