Tesla will release major Autopilot improvements to vehicles outside the US in March 2022

According to Musk, Tesla’s goal is to release major Autopilot (automatic assisted driving) improvements to vehicles outside the United States around March 2022. Given that Europe is committed to improving road safety through a series of regulations requiring the installation of vehicle safety systems in vehicles in the next few years, the timing of Tesla’s release of Autopilot improvements seems appropriate.

According to Whole Mars on Twitter, many Tesla Autopilot users in Europe complained that the speed limit was incorrect and the speed was not reached before the brand was passed. Musk responded on Twitter that the goal of Tesla’s self-driving team is to make major improvements for car owners outside the United States around March, based on regulatory approvals.

Some EU regulatory agencies are formulating mandatory vehicle safety system requirements for all cars sold and registered in EU member states. In 2019, EU countries reached an agreement on the General Safety Regulations, which is a new vehicle safety law. The details of the agreement stipulate requirements for various mandatory vehicle systems.

In January 2020, Regulation (EU) No. 2019/2144 came into effect, stipulating that vehicles must introduce a series of new technologies and safety measures. This regulation will become mandatory in all EU member states before July 6, 2022. The Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (bmvi) has established a detailed timetable for the implementation of this regulation, as shown in the figure below.

Next year, drivers’ drowsiness and attention warning systems, intelligent speed assist systems, advanced emergency braking systems and emergency lane-keeping assist systems will be mandatory. Then by 2024, every car sold in the EU must be equipped with the above technology.

Tesla Autopilot seems very suitable for the EU’s new car safety regulations. The regulations also provide simpler and more direct guidance for Tesla to obtain regulatory approvals in parts of Europe, especially EU countries.
