Huawei P50 Pro and P50 Pocket, European prices are staggering

Two of the most prestigious smartphones presented by Huawei in the just ended 2021, the P50 Pro and the compact folding clamshell P50 Pocket, are arriving in Europe at decidedly salty prices, according to the well-known insider @_snoopytech_: in fact, we are talking about, respectively, 1,199 and 1,622 euros. The reaction meme has already been put there by the source, so we abstain.

Not that the two smartphones don’t have much to offer, of course: the P50 is one of the best camera phones on the market, and the P50 Pocket is one of the few smartphones with that particular form factor, which according to the most recent statistics is gaining the favor of the great audience.

The problem is that, due to the ban imposed by the United States, they also imply various compromises that are difficult to accept: for example, the operating system is not Android, but a fork developed in a house called HarmonyOS; there are no Google Mobile Services, replaced by Huawei Mobile Services, and there is no Play Store, replaced by the App Gallery.

This in practice means that very famous services that could be defined as almost essential in everyday life – YouTube, Google itself, Chrome, Gmail, Maps and many others – will not be available. As if that weren’t enough, Huawei might not even work with SoC vendors, but it managed to get an exception with Qualcomm, as long as they stay away from any kind of 5G-related technology; this in practice means that smartphones only offer older generation 4G connectivity. It is true that today 5G is still whitefly on our part, but paying such a high price for a smartphone that does not have it, in 2022, is a difficult choice to recommend.
