The decision to shut down Yahoo Answers has been met with mixed responses. Some expressed nostalgia, recalling the role the site played in the early days of the internet. Others are happy to see it disappear, arguing that it has long since served no relevant purpose. Even some new internet users have never used the service at all.

Yahoo itself explains why it closed Yahoo Answers as follows

Yahoo Answers has been closed since May 4, 2021. Yahoo Answers used to be a key part of Yahoo’s products and services, but its popularity has declined over the years as the needs of our members have changed. We’ve decided to shift our resources from Yahoo Answers to a product that better serves our members and delivers on Yahoo’s commitment to delivering quality, trusted content.

Closing Yahoo Answers, Yahoo said the most important and immediate reason was the “decline in popularity.” If the site continues to maintain its early popularity, it’s a safe bet that it’s still around. This decline is largely a direct result of the quality (or lack) of answers provided by this site. The overall usefulness of Yahoo Answers has been declining over the years compared to sites like Quora and Reddit, where much of the site’s content has devolved into conspiracy theories and nonsense. Unlike its competitors, Yahoo has never been able to control these elements and maintain its attributes as a useful destination.
