Apple strives to push users to upgrade to iOS 15, and stops releasing iOS 14 security updates

According to the latest reports, Apple is encouraging users still running iOS 14 to update to iOS 15, contrary to the previous policy that allowed iOS 14 users to choose not to install the iOS 15 update. When it released iOS 15, Apple said that the iOS system provided “a choice between two software update versions” and promised to provide security updates for those users who chose to continue using iOS 14.

iOS now offers a choice of two system update versions in settings. Users can upgrade to the latest version after iOS 15 is released to get new features and full security updates or continue to use iOS 14 and still get critical security updates until they are ready to upgrade to the next major version (iOS 15).

In previous versions, iOS updates were prominently placed in front of the Software Update section of the Settings app, but when iOS 15 just launched, the reminder was a footnote at the bottom of the Software Update screen on iOS 14 devices, and It’s easy to avoid.

Apple appears to have been less patient with users who don’t use iOS 15 over the past few months, and is pushing iOS 14 users to update, the report said. On devices running iOS 14, iOS 15 updates are no longer a footnote at the bottom of the “Software Updates” section, and Apple has stopped releasing iOS 14 security updates.

MacRumors pointed out that Apple previously had a clear option for users to stay in iOS 14 and receive updates, but this appears to have been removed with the launch of iOS 15.2. In the iOS 15.2.1 update released yesterday, Apple did not reintroduce the holdover option for iOS 14, which should be a clear signal that Apple now wants people to upgrade. iPhone users who want the latest security protections must now update to iOS 15.

For example, Apple released the iOS 14.8.1 security update in October 2021. For iPhones still running iOS 14.8, the iOS 14.8.1 update will no longer be available, and Apple will only offer iOS 15.2.1 as an installation option.

iOS 15 is available on all devices capable of running iOS 14, and removing the option to keep iOS 14 may prompt users to upgrade. Currently, 72% of devices launched in the past four years have iOS 15 installed, which is significantly lower than the system adoption rate of previous iOS versions.
