Google makes white noise sound worse on smart speakers

A number of users of smart speakers and displays with Google Assistant like to listen to white noise to help them sleep by saying “Ok Google, play white noise”. Earlier this week Google changed the ambient sound of white noise by sparking a wave of complaints from users of Google Home and Google Nest devices.

Google changes the sound of white noise on devices

The first reports of this new white noise sound surfaced a couple of days ago and it has currently been fully rolled out for all users, many of whom complain that it is much quieter and more subdued and repeats every 10 minutes instead of every hour. There are a hundred complaints between the Google Nest and Reddit communities.

The 14 ambient sounds offered by Google can be played for 12 hours if not disabled by a sleep timer. The 2nd generation Nest Hub offers a neat auto-shutdown feature when the user falls asleep. It goes without saying that most users hope that Google will at least provide the ability to request the original sound from Google Assistant. If it helps, a user uploaded the original white noise version to Google Drive.
