Nintendo finds fake official website reminding players to beware of scams

Nintendo released a statement on its official website yesterday (January 14), and the company has confirmed that there are fake websites posing as Nintendo’s official homepage and selling Nintendo merchandise at deep discounts. Nintendo stated that these fake websites have nothing to do with the company, and players who choose to buy goods on Nintendo’s official website in Japan should pay attention to distinguish the authenticity.

The fake sites illegally used the Nintendo logo to make it appear as if they were run by Nintendo, and the pages featured Nintendo products, including the Switch. Players who purchase products from fake websites may be at risk of fraud, and may also cause the leakage of players’ personal information, resulting in damage to personal and property safety. Nintendo officials have now reported to the police and relevant ministries and agencies.

In December, one of the leading members of the Switch hacking group that sold modchips was fined $10 million, and he has already received $4.5 million in another case. Gary Bowser, a member of Team-Xecuter’s hacking group, has been ordered to pay Nintendo a fine for selling mods on the Switch and 3DS. Ohio-based Uberchips website operator Tom Dilts Jr, which also sells Team-Xecuter products, was sued by Nintendo in May 2020. Dilts then took the site offline and agreed to pay Nintendo $2 million in damages.
