Apple adds last MacBook Pro with CD drive to retro list

According to an internal memo, Apple will add the mid-2012 model 13-inch MacBook Pro to its list of retro products on January 31. Released in June 2012, this 13-inch MacBook Pro model was the last Mac Apple sold with a built-in CD/DVD drive (a few months later, Apple introduced the first MacBook Pro with a Retina screen mid-2012).

The last MacBook Pro with a CD drive was discontinued in October 2016, and as a lower-priced option, it was on the market at the same time as the thinner 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display. Apple believes that a device can be included in the retro product list once it has stopped selling it for more than five years. Retro products used to be ineligible for repair in most regions, but Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers now offer repairs for retro products for up to seven years, subject to parts availability.

On the software side, Apple dropped support for macOS Big Sur in mid-2012 model 13/15″ MacBook Pros in 2020 (but there are actually ways to force the system to run, but macOS Monterey is no longer supported due to Bluetooth, this method no longer works).
