Switching to AMD Ryzen processors cuts Tesla Model 3 range by 2.4%

Tesla had previously used Intel Atom processors in its infotainment system but recently switched to AMD Rulong chips. However, consulting service company Teslascope pointed out in a report that the Tesla Model 3 with an upgraded AMD in-vehicle platform has significantly improved performance, while also reducing the average range of electric vehicles by 2.4%.

Reports show that Tesla has sent new notices to owners who have pre-ordered the Model 3. Meanwhile, while the Model Y’s range has grown, it’s clearly related to the larger battery capacity. Teslacope noted on Twitter that customers in certain market areas will be required to accept a “slightly reduced” nominal range from pre-orders.

While the company doesn’t explicitly mention AMD, it does indicate that the new version is affecting the vehicle’s range:

We’ve updated Model 3 to optimize the touchscreen experience of the onboard computer. This requires higher hardware power overhead and results in a slight dip in range. For the Model 3, you booked, the current WLTP nominal range has been changed to 602 kilometers, which is 22 kilometers less than the initial information.

Tesla then pressed users if they still wanted to go ahead and order the vehicles in question, but as Teslacope pointed out, not all owners who pre-ordered the Model 3 received that information. As for why this is done in the Australian market, perhaps the country’s Consumer Protection Act is more stringent.

In fact, as early as October last year, the dismantling of the MCU parts for the Model S Plaid model showed that it used AMD Ryzen chips. Since then, many models, including Model S / X, have also been replaced with new models based on AMD chips. It can be seen that this Ryzen embedded quad-core processor (YE180FC3T4MFG) has 512KB L2 + 4MB L3 cache per core, and the nominal power consumption is 45W.

In addition, the Radeon Core Display (GPU) section is marked “215-130000026”, and the specs are speculated to be close to the Radeon Pro W6600.
