Apple removes Unidays verification requirement to educate customers on purchases

Apple appears to have changed its mind just a few days after implementing a policy requiring stricter verification for customers of its online education store. Apple on Wednesday began requiring students, teachers and other customers in the education sector to verify their identities before getting a 10 percent discount on Apple products. Previously, Apple did not need to have a corresponding certification process.

Just a few days later, however, on Friday, Apple had removed the verification requirement for Unidays, a service designed to give students and educators discounts on various products or services, from its Education Store.

It’s unclear if the reversal is temporary or if Apple has decided not to conduct more rigorous verification of education purchases. But Apple still maintains strict purchase limits on its Education Store for now. For example, customers can only order one desktop, Mac mini, or notebook per year, and purchases of accessories and iPads are also limited to two products per year.

In addition to the Education Store, Apple also requires customers to verify their education status through Unidays in order to qualify for the discounted Apple Music campus discount program, a requirement that is still being implemented.
