Panasonic will mass-produce Tesla 4680 batteries next year

Panasonic plans to start mass production of new lithium battery products for Tesla in early 2023, which will achieve a 20% increase in battery life, thereby maintaining a competitive advantage with Korean and Chinese rivals. The so-called new battery is the 4680 non-pole ear cylindrical battery, which is 46mm in diameter and 80mm in height. It was released on Tesla Battery Day in 2020.

Tesla has previously claimed that the energy density of the 4680 battery has been increased by 5 times, the cruising range of the vehicle has increased by 16%, the power has been increased by 6 times compared with the battery with tabs, and the power output has been increased by 6 times.

In addition, in terms of innovative manufacturing and assembly, Musk said that the 4680 battery saves about 86% of the cost in total, and reduces the cost per kWh by 76%. Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, electric vehicles have more cost advantages.

However, judging from the time, the mass production time of the 4680 battery is more than 1 year later than the original schedule. The earlier comparison pictures show that the 4680 battery cells are huge compared to Panasonic’s 1865 and 2170 batteries.
