In short, while a little while ago we reported a nice positive sign – from next month the new flagships will follow the same roadmap of the updates of the other Pixels, without more delays -, now we have to reopen the less happy speech of a few days ago: no incompatibility with external accessories, here is a function that users have to deal with practically every time they use their smartphone.

Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro: Adaptive brightness is a tantrum

Let’s start from the basics: in general, adaptive brightness is the function that controls and adjusts the brightness of the smartphone display based on a series of factors: the application in use, the time of day and the surrounding light conditions. Just to stay in the Google home, the Pixel 6, which has Android 12 on board, makes use of an optical sensor in order to determine the amount of light present in the place where the user is.

Based on this data, the Pixel AI programming starts to automatically adjust the brightness of the screen, thus avoiding the user having to do it manually using the dedicated slider.

As an example, let’s say that the user is using a very bright application in a dark environment, in which case the adaptive brightness should work to set the display in such a way that it is clearly visible but also comfortable for the eyes of the ‘user.

Unfortunately, this is what should be the case in theory, but in practice it happens quite frequently that adaptive brightness does not do its job correctly, for example, overshadowing certain apps when the surrounding room is dark and thus rendering the content barely visible on the display.

Of course, users who do not want to find themselves from time to time having to manually compensate for the annoying behavior of the function in question can safely disable it completely by going to Settings > Display and then deactivating the Adaptive Brightness toggle.

If you own a Google Pixel 6 or a Google Pixel 6 Pro, according to the numerous reports on Reddit, it is likely that you have already encountered similar problems and, therefore, it is not remote the hypothesis that you already have proceeded to disable adaptive brightness. Well, know that the problem can be solved with the solution illustrated below.

A reset fixes the adaptive brightness on the Google Pixel 6

The solution explained below is not exactly new, Big G allows it to be exploited since the time of Android 9 Pie (yes, occasionally this problem seems to recur). If you have a Google Pixel 6 or a Pixel 6 Pro with Android 12 and adaptive brightness throwing a tantrum in your hands, try these steps:

  • Enter the Settings of the smartphone.
  • Open the Apps section and then click on Show all apps.
  • Scroll down to find Device Health Services and click on it.
  • Once you have entered the app information, tap on Storage & cache and then on Manage space (you will notice the trash icon, but nothing will be deleted yet).
  • Tap on Reset adaptive brightness and then on OK in the confirmation request.

In this way, the AI will forget what it has previously learned incorrectly and will relearn how to adjust the brightness properly. The improvements have been confirmed by various users on Reddit. Of course, although reference has been made here to the Pixel 6, the guide also works with the previous models (the various Google Pixel 3a, Google Pixel 4, Google Pixel 4a, Google Pixel 5).
