We have reviewed Xiaomi 12, 12 Pro and look forward to getting our hands on 12X, all models ready for Europe but which could be overshadowed by Xiaomi 12S . Since we are talking about the new generation top of the range, they are all smartphones equipped with the latest Qualcomm solutions.
In particular, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, is causing insiders to discuss so much about energy consumption. First Moto Edge 30 Ultra and then Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro have shown that they do not manage temperatures in the best possible way. When compared, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 would be both less efficient and less powerful than the Dimensity 9000.
The reason why the MediaTek SoC would be able to do better than the Qualcomm one would soon be said: TSMC. As has been happening for a few years, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is manufactured by Samsung, as was the case for Snapdragon 888 and 888+.
And it is probably no coincidence that this trio of SoCs has the same temperature problems, despite the transition from 5 to 4 nm of the Snap 8 Gen 1. Qualcomm would be aware of this and would be working to fix it. Simply put, move from Samsung to TSMC to produce the next chipset.
And this is where we get to the rumors around what would be a new variant of Xiaomi 12 Pro, signed as L2S. Hence the name Xiaomi 12S, a name hypothesized for the moment and which presumably will not be the official one. But that’s not the important thing, but rather what Digital Chat Station claims. In one of his latest posts on Weibo, the leaker writes that L2S could be the new smartphone with the SM8475 hardware platform.
Also in this case we do not know what the SM8475 will be called: there are those who speak of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, others of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+. In any case, the chipset would be a direct evolution of the current model and would therefore always have a 4 nm production process.
This time around, however, its manufacture would be entrusted to TSMC, the same company that manufactured MediaTek’s more efficient Dimensity 9000. If this new Xiaomi 12 Pro actually arrived on the market, it cannot be ruled out that many might prefer it to the currently marketed model.
