Microsoft’s XGP service will be upgraded to stop charging inactive members

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recently launched an investigation into Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass business. After the survey results are released, Microsoft will optimize the automatic renewal, refund and inactive members of the XGP business in the near future.

Among these optimizations, the biggest part of the change is that if a Game Pass account goes dormant, Microsoft will no longer continue to charge it a monthly fee.

Michael Grenfell, Executive Director of the CMA, said in a recent press release: “Players need to see clear and timely information to make informed choices when signing up for auto-renewing memberships and subscription services. We are pleased to see that Microsoft A formal commitment has been made to the CMA to optimize the business, protect consumers, and provide refunds to some consumers.”

The CMA provided details on Microsoft’s upcoming changes, including:

More straightforward information: Microsoft will provide transparent and straightforward information to allow consumers to clearly understand the content of the Xbox membership service. For example, consumers need to turn off the auto-renew button, otherwise the subscription service will automatically renew, and also There are auto-renewal fees and how consumers can apply for a refund if they accidentally auto-renew.

Refunds: Microsoft will contact users who are currently on a recurring 12-month subscription contract with the option to terminate the contract and receive a prorated refund.

Inactive users: Microsoft will contact members who are currently not using the service for a long time but are still paying. Microsoft will tell members how to stop paying. Microsoft will eventually stop charging those members if they still don’t use the service.

Price increase information reminder: If the price is increased in the future, Microsoft will give a clear reminder, and ensure that users who do not want to accept higher prices will be informed of the method to turn off automatic renewal.

These optimizations will only be implemented in the UK for the time being, but a Microsoft representative said in an interview that XGP members around the world will eventually receive these upgrades.

Sony and Nintendo are also being investigated by the CMA in the UK, although they have yet to say anything similar to Microsoft’s optimization measures.
