As part of the business figures, Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 5 has now sold 17.3 million units. So almost 4 million (3.9 million) units were sold in the Christmas business. How do you classify these numbers?
PlayStation 5 lags behind PlayStation 4
The PlayStation 4 already sold more than 20 million units during this period and had an extremely strong Christmas business with over 6 million units. However, you could also buy the console as normal in the store.
Sony is still struggling with the chip crisis with the PlayStation 5 after more than a year and cannot meet the demand. You can also sell a PS5 on eBay and Co. for 700+ euros, although the RRP is less than 500 euros.
So yes, the PlayStation 4 was “more successful” at this point, but the early numbers indicated that the PlayStation 5 will be even more popular. In order to be able to classify the development of the PS5, we have to wait for the end of the chip crisis. However, there are indications that this will unfortunately not happen in 2022.
PS: Sony actually wanted to break the 20 million mark by the end of March, but is no longer assuming that it will. As part of the call, it was said indirectly that the chip crisis is annoying and one hopes that the PS5 will catch up afterward.
The PlayStation 5 has sold in 17.3 million units as of December 31, 2021 according to Sony.
This compares to 20.2 million for PlayStation 4 in the same timeframe, when launch aligned
