Steam finally starts showing game size before players click install

Valve started letting Steam users see the size of a game before trying to install it. The game library page will eventually list the total space required by the game, without having to click install first to see disk space details and estimated download times. The small change is rolling out as part of this week’s Steam beta update, which means it should go live for all Steam users in the coming weeks.

The change comes after Valve updated its download page in September to make it more informative. This overhaul includes improvements to the section that manages storage, as well as showing more details about download progress and installation progress.

Valve redesigned its Steam library in 2019 to make it easier to find games, see what friends are playing, and follow updates or news from game developers. Operational experience with Discord and the Epic Games Store has driven Valve to modernize Steam, which has been accused of often lagging behind in-game store usability and design.

The latest download changes come as Valve prepares to launch its Steam Deck handheld, no doubt to improve the experience there as well. Steam Deck will go on sale on February 25th.
