Google adds free Workspace Essentials plan to attract more users

Google Workspace, the productivity suite, is getting an update today with the addition of a free Google Workspace Essentials subscription plan. Through this free program, Google hopes to provide users with basic Workspace productivity tools, bringing more enterprise users to the platform.

Currently, if you want to use Workspace with non-Google email, you need to sign up for a Business Starter account after a 14-day trial, which costs $6 per person per month. This paid plan will not be canceled, but now you will need to sign up with your work email and no credit card information will be required for the whole process.

The Workspace Essentials subscription plan is arguably the entry-level version of the Business Starter plan, dropping the storage quota from 30GB to 15GB. The plan offers a Google Meet service for up to 100 people per call, 60 minutes or less per call. You can also enter Spaces for work collaboration and chat with colleagues using Chat. Of course, all the standard tools like Sheets, Slides and Docs are also included.

“With Essentials Starter, we make it easy for employees to choose their own productivity tools and bring modern collaboration to work,” Google wrote in the announcement. “Google Workspace Essentials Starter is an easy way for people to get started with Google at work, by themselves or with a team.

Workspace is designed in. While it does include some lightweight administrative controls — like the ability to invite users to join their teams — features like fine-grained IT controls and more advanced security are only available on the paid Google Workspace plan to obtain.”
