Microsoft sees gaming as important for ‘the next internet’

The Xbox division may not have been a niche division in the past, but it wasn’t exactly the focus of attention either. And so it happened that the Xbox was almost discontinued. Hard to believe when you look at Microsoft’s current willingness to pay.

You’re investing a lot of money in Xbox Game Pass, you’re investing in xCloud, you’re buying one big studio after another, and most of you will probably have noticed that you want to spend almost $70 billion on Activision Blizzard.

Incidentally, Satya Nadella revealed in an interview with the Financial Times that it is assumed that there will be no problems with the takeover. After all, even then you are only number 3 on the market and do not have a large market share.

Why is Microsoft doing all this?

But why is Microsoft doing all this? Satya Nadella believes in the Metaverse, i.e. a future in a digital world. And gaming will be the crucial platform here to build “the next internet” in the years to come.

In my opinion, just being able to make great games gives us permission to build this next platform, which is basically the next internet: the embodied presence.

Today I’m playing a game, but I’m not in the game. Now through these metaverses, we can start dreaming: I can literally be in the game just as I can be in a conference room with you in a meeting. This metaphor and the technology… will manifest in different contexts.

So for Microsoft, it’s about more than a few good games or even a subscription to games, the investments of the last few months should be the basis for the future of the tech world. And gaming is a big core element for Satya Nadella.
