Google Chrome OS 98 is here! Lean progressive web apps, new emoji display & small improvements

A few days after the release of Chrome 98, Chrome OS 98 is also in the starting blocks and will be rolled out for the first Chromebooks: As usual, the operating system contains most of the improvements from the browser package and only brings a few updates with it. No wonder, because the big power release will follow in a few weeks.

Chrome OS 98 is here, and it brings some minor improvements to Chromebooks, including new PWA rendering, changed emojis, and a new one-stop for data protection and privacy settings. You can find all the details in the Chrome article. In addition to these improvements, there are only small steps for the operating system, because the next big momentum will probably be saved for the important Chrome 100 release.

Google itself does not mention any new features, but the following innovations have been found at AndroidPolice:

  • Revised language settings
  • Network-Based Recovery
  • New shortcut for virtual desktops
  • Dark mode flag for the virtual keyboard
  • “Save as” setting for screen captures
  • Dark Mode support for the Files app
  • Improved scrolling performance in the Android apps
  • Google Play Store search will be disabled in the launcher

Probably not what the mass of users has been waiting for. Of course, the new Chrome Journeys is also part of the release
