Tesla recalls more than 26,000 vehicles due to bug in windshield software

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Wednesday local time that Tesla will recall 26,681 vehicles for a windshield software bug that could affect drivers’ vision. The recall involves some Model 3, Model S, and Model X produced from 2021 to 2022 and some Model Y produced from 2020 to 2022.

The software flaw could cause “a valve in the heat pump to open unexpectedly, focusing refrigerant in the evaporator, affecting defrost effectiveness and driver visibility. The flaw, the NHTSA said, increases the risk of a crash and does not meet standards set by the federal agency.

As part of the recall program, Tesla will over-the-air upgrade the software of the vehicles in question, with a notice sent to owners on April 1. Tesla last week recalled more than 800,000 vehicles for defective seat belts; in December it recalled 475,000 vehicles for problems with rear-view cameras and trunks.
