Microsoft: 40% off legacy Google G Suite users migrating to Microsoft 365 subscriptions

Microsoft is welcoming Google G Suite users with an attractive offer. Those migrating from “traditional” G Suite can get up to 60% off their Microsoft 365 subscription (that’s up to 40% off). This offer is valid for all iterations of the office productivity and collaboration platform. Microsoft also offers free migration support and 24×7 support to small businesses.

Google announced last month that it would start requiring subscription fees for free “traditional” G Suite accounts. These users can use the service for free until May 1, 2022. The traditional free edition was originally called Google Apps, but was later renamed G Suite and then Google Workspace.

Businesses, schools and individuals who have been relying on Google’s custom domain for email hosting (instead of just gmail.com) will have to choose a paid plan to keep the service. Plans start with Business Starter at $6/user/month and go up to $18/user/month.

Microbusinesses with just one Gmail account can also upgrade to Workspace Individual for $9.99/month, but they won’t get a custom email address.

Google stopped offering the traditional free version back in December 2012. However, the company allows existing users to use its service for free. This grace period is coming to an end. Google has warned that it may suspend access to automatic Workspace subscriptions/accounts if users do not enter billing details by July 1, 2022.

Microsoft is clearly targeting these kinds of users, who now have to pay for access to Google’s G Suite and related services. The company has officially listed the offer on its website, valid until August 2, 2022. Businesses, schools and individuals can choose a Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Microsoft 365 Business Standard or Microsoft 365 Business Premium subscription. The 60% discount is valid for all iterations. Additionally, all plans offer:

  • Ability to meet, chat and host calls with up to 300 people.
  • Web and mobile versions of Office applications.
  • 1TB of cloud storage.
  • Business-grade email.
  • Phone and web support anytime.

Probably not many users of the traditional free edition of G Suite. However, those who continue to use custom email domains may lose access to Workspace “core services” such as Gmail, Calendar and Meetings. So Microsoft’s proposal seems to make some sense. U.S. customers get one year of Business Assistant and one year of Microsoft 365 Small Business Expert 24/7 for free.
