Ford overtook longtime champion Toyota to take the No. 1 spot in the fourth-quarter ranking of non-luxury brands. Ford last held this position in 2015, and Toyota previously held the top spot for nearly four years. Chevrolet came in third.

The Kelley Blue Book also noted that in the fourth quarter of last year, purchase intent for Tesla had the largest increase of any luxury brand, with 18 percent of car buyers considering Tesla, up 3 percentage points.

The Tesla Model Y became the most popular crossover or SUV for the first time, replacing the Lexus RX, which held the top spot for the second year in a row, and was the only U.S.-made SUV in the top five.

The Model 3 held the No. 1 spot among sedans for the fourth consecutive quarter, while the Model S dropped from No. 2 to No. 3, swapping places with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
