Android: Finally more storage space, the smart Google Files supports deleting unnecessary apps

The smart file manager Google Files offers three major functional areas, which include not only file access but also cleaning up smartphones. The main thing is to free up as much storage space as possible that is being occupied by unnecessary apps or files. An update for the app selection is now being rolled out, which can make the search for superfluous apps much easier.

When the storage space on the smartphone is running out, good advice is expensive. If you can’t insert a memory card, you can’t avoid deleting data – but that doesn’t always have to be pictures, videos or other downloads. Some apps can also be a real heavyweight and occupy hundreds of megabytes or more on the devices. Tracking down these is one of the tasks of the file manager Google Files.

Normally, when looking for superfluous apps, one proceeds according to two criteria: either the time of the last use or the occupied storage space. The latter shows how the fastest fire brigade can be played. The first, on the other hand, shows apps that you can presumably very well do without. Google Files now allows a combination of both filters and takes a third categorization on board – namely the games. It’s often games that take up more space than an app.

After the most recent update, there are new filter chips in the selection of apps to be deleted. These allow you to filter according to the three categories already mentioned or combine them with one another if necessary. Just take a look at the screenshots below, which show the filters and their effects.

If you activate all three filters, only games that take up a lot of storage space and have not been played for a long time will be displayed. I think that you are on the safe side and can delete without hesitation. However, the list in the combination of these three filters should also be emptied very quickly.

But deleting content for new files is only a postponement anyway, because at some point you have deleted everything and simply need additional storage space.

Not only do you need the latest version of Google Files for this feature, you also need to grant the app access to usage statistics. Without these, it is not possible to find out the rarely used apps.
