Final Fantasy 14 director and producer Naoki Yoshida recently reassured Final Fantasy 14 fans that they have no intention of introducing NFTs (non-fungible tokens) into the game.
Yoshida addressed this issue in a live interview with the producers of Issue 68 through Square Translator Aimi Tokubu. NFTs have always been a controversial topic in games, and fans can rest assured that Yoshida will not ignore the fans’ thoughts.
Based on the design of Final Fantasy 14, Yoshida made it clear that they currently do not plan to add any NFT elements to the game. He further clarified that players shouldn’t be worried about this as they have no intention of incorporating it into the game in the future.
This direction seems to contradict Square CEO Matsuda Yosuke Matsuda’s earlier New Year’s statement, in which he said the rapid growth of NFTs would provide direction for Square’s business practices. Many fans are adamantly against the idea, and it’s not something you’ll see in SE’s housekeeping MMO now, at least.
Yoshida sees NFTs as an interesting new business model, but games require specific designs to take advantage of them, and Final Fantasy XIV cannot accommodate that.
