Google Hangouts will be discontinued and replaced by Google Chat

There is probably no other Google product that was dying on installments that has been stretched out as much as Google Hangouts. The discontinuation of the messenger has been around for many years, was officially announced two years ago and has still not been brought to fruition. But in a few days, it will finally be over. That is, almost.

For a long time, Google didn’t want to confirm that Hangouts was on the verge of extinction – although a successor, Allo, was launched. This has long been forgotten and meanwhile, there is the next successor with Google Chat. The chat app in the Workspace universe has been able to replace Hangouts for a long time and according to the current statement, this should be irreversible from March 22, 2022.

Beginning March 22, 2022, we’ll turn on the “Chat preferred” setting for any customers who haven’t already done so, making Google Chat the default chat application. This means that when users visit classic Hangouts in Gmail on the web or the classic Hangouts mobile apps, they’ll be directed to Chat.

Chat replaces Hangouts in Gmail and the Android apps. However, this is still not a final step, because the web version at hangouts.google.com should continue to work. Personal hiring is not scheduled to begin until it is complete in Workspace accounts. Originally, the whole thing was supposed to be completed by the end of 2021. It was not announced what the problem was.

Some users report that not all conversations from Hangouts have been transferred to Chat to date. Maybe it’s because of that.
