TikTok is supporting longer 10-minute videos to rival YouTube

TikTok videos are now longer. The short-form video service has apparently confirmed that it is rolling out the ability to upload videos up to 10 minutes long to everyone around the world.

Matt Navarra, a social media consultant, tweeted an account update from TikTok, saying the new easing of video restrictions is available on mobile devices (including the best Android phones) and the desktop site.

British journalist Chris Stokel-Walker also tweeted what looked like a confirmation from a TikTok representative about the longer video upload:

Today, we’re excited to begin rolling out the ability to upload videos up to 10 minutes long, which we hope will unlock even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.

This isn’t the first time TikTok has expanded video limits for users, though. Last July, the platform introduced the ability to create videos three minutes long, a significant increase from the previous 60 seconds.

The latest expansion is not surprising. Less than two months after TikTok started allowing everyone to upload videos as long as 3 minutes, it was spotted experimenting with 10-minute uploads.

Longer video uploads can give creators more flexibility. Currently, when a user uploads a relatively long piece of content to the platform, it needs to be split into multiple parts. As Navarra points out, TikTok’s latest update shows that the company is looking increasingly hard at encroaching on YouTube’s turf.

It remains to be seen how this affects the platform’s recommendation algorithm in the long run, and whether the control short videos hold over users remains the same.
