StatCounter: iPhone is the most popular smartphone in Five Eyes countries

According to the latest report, if you’ve discussed smartphones, even with people who aren’t that interested in tech, you’ve likely had an iPhone vs. Android smartphone debate. Common arguments in favor of Apple’s products include its simplicity, ecosystem, and the fact that some feel the device is somehow more unique and premium.

Regarding the last point, you would think that there are more Android devices than iPhones, and that is true globally, but in a lot of countries, iPhones are used by most people. In the StatCounter data below, you can see that the iPhone is the most popular smartphone in the Five Eyes countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) as well as Japan, Northern Europe, France and Saudi Arabia.

They’re also the most popular devices in Russia, but that may change soon, as Apple recently stopped selling there. Globally, iOS is used on only 28.27% of devices, while Android is used on 70.97% of devices. Only in a few countries are iOS devices used by more than half the population, and even in some countries where Apple is the most popular phone maker, it still doesn’t have 50% of the iOS market share.

In the US, 57.8% of smartphones run iOS, while 41.91% run Android. In the UK, 53.6% of devices use iOS and 45.89% use Android. Ironically, a few months ago there was a controversy about the blue and green bubbles displayed on iMessage.

Some teens are bullied for owning an Android phone instead of an iPhone because they appear as green bubbles in front of iMessage users. Google’s Hiroshi Lockheimer expressed dissatisfaction with Apple’s approach, calling it peer pressure to try to win more customers.
