Android 12L: Display problems on smartphones with notch or cameras under the display (screenshot)

A few days ago, Google released the final version of Android 12L, which is primarily aimed at devices with larger displays such as tablets or foldable but has currently only been rolled out on pixel smartphones. Exactly in this area, namely the display dimensions, an annoying bug has now appeared, which probably results from faulty interaction between the operating system, frameworks and apps.

Android has become a bit more flexible in terms of display in recent years, which has been accelerated primarily by the notch and the front camera integrated into the display. Depending on the application, this can result in different display heights. Because the apps can use the upper area, but should of course not accommodate any important elements behind the notch or camera. Thanks to various frameworks, this is no great art for developers.

Now, however, some users are reporting graphical issues with Android 12L, which you can see in the screenshot above. Status bars, background colors and elements at the top of the display are sometimes displayed incorrectly. This is just a visual issue that is immediately obvious but still very annoying. Apps like Snapchat, Spotify, Twitter or even Google News are affected.

It is quite possible that this will cause major problems with some apps with fixed elements at the top, but nothing is known about this at the moment. The first thing to do now is to find out where the problem actually lies. On Android 12L, on the frameworks or on the apps. In any case, it only occurs in conjunction with Android 12L.
