Xbox President once studied N64 and PS to understand the host, praised the design of the N64 handle is very cool

Xbox president Phil Spencer, who has publicly described himself as a huge gaming fan on several occasions, briefly touched on his ties to the console when he appeared on the Xbox Podcast earlier this weekend. Phil Spencer looks back on his childhood gaming experience with a podcast where he talks about the transition from being an insider at Microsoft to being on the Xbox team.

Phil Spencer said he had never touched a modern console before the original Xbox was developed. So, he decided to do a “crash course” in consoles and went for a Nintendo N64 and a Sony PlayStation.

Phil Spencer said that most of his historical games were actually in that Amiga, Atari and PC space, and wasn’t a serious console player at the time. His first foray into console gaming was when the Xbox launched, and before that, it was playing Ultima Online, which was mostly PC gaming at the time. But when Phil Spencer joined the Xbox team, to figure out what the console was, he went and bought a bunch of stuff like N64s and PlayStations.

Phil Spencer also shared some thoughts on these consoles, he thinks the N64’s controller design is unique, like a controller built for three-handed people, which is as good as its games, which is kind of cool Because it’s kind of like two controllers in one.

Phil Spencer is more committed to the Xbox now than ever, but overall, he’s still a solid gamer. He said he wanted to make games more accessible to the general public and called on the industry to focus on supporting the preservation of video games.
