Tesla FSD beta update reduces ghost brakes/increases steering smoothness

According to the latest reports, Tesla has recently begun to push the update of the full self-driving beta version 10.11 to users, and the release notes include several key improvements to the semi-autonomous driving system. The update is said to improve the vehicle’s detection of pedestrians and non-motor vehicles by 44.9%, thereby reducing the incidence of “ghost braking”.

According to Tesla’s explanation, this function will increase the calibration size of pedestrians and bicycles, reducing the probability of the system identifying “fake people” or “fake bicycles”, thus allowing the vehicle to minimize the frequency of automatic deceleration.

Important improvements also mentioned in the update announcement notes include:

More accurately predict the position of the vehicle turning or merging, and minimize unnecessary braking; when the map is inaccurate or the car cannot follow the navigation system, improve the vehicle’s understanding and judgment of the priority of the right of way, and enhance the safety of the vehicle’s automatic driving sex;

Reduced the speed prediction error of motorcycles, scooters, wheelchairs and pedestrians at very close distances by 63.6%; improved the experience of the vehicle during rapid acceleration in a slow creep state, and improved driving comfort;

Build an “obstacle network” by continuously predicting the distance between the vehicle and different objects, thereby improving the vehicle’s control over its surroundings;

The calibration range of the monitoring data is increased by 14%, which reduces the probability of the FSD system erroneously judging that the vehicle ahead is in a parked state by 17%, and also improves the accuracy of judging the brake lights of the vehicle ahead;

Adjusted the loss function to improve the performance of the FSD system is difficult scenarios, reducing the running speed error in clear road scenarios by 5%, and increasing the running speed error in expressway scenarios by 10%;

Enhanced FSD system’s detection of door openings of nearby vehicles, and improved ability to control own vehicle’s response to this situation, such as braking or emergency avoidance;

To make the vehicle turn more smoothly, the main method is to improve the FSD system to determine which lane is useful and which is not useful when the vehicle is turning, and set the horizontal, vertical acceleration, or rapid acceleration valve for the vehicle on the travel route based on the kinematics of the vehicle value;

By improving the transmission capacity of the Ethernet data transmission pipeline by 15%, the stability of the U1 visualization of the FSD system is improved;

Currently, FSD beta 10.11 is only available to Tesla employees, but if all goes well, other users should get the update in the coming days. What’s more, on March 13, Elon Musk said on Twitter that Tesla “may” open access to FSD beta testing to users with a driver safety score of 95.

The previous major update to the FSD beta system was to version 10.10 in early February, which removed the rolling stop feature that drew criticism from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to statistics, as of the fourth quarter of 2021, nearly 60,000 Tesla owners participated in the FSD Beta program.
