Netflix: Trial of account sharing for an additional fee

Netflix

Netflix

Netflix is taking stricter action against account sharing. Maybe some have a subscription that they share with friends outside of their own household. Officially, sharing is only allowed in your own household, which is why Netflix has tried in the past to make sharing more difficult by asking for a PIN. Otherwise, you probably know yourself: Sharing is easy.

Now Netflix steps in.

It’s been working on ways over the last year to allow members who share outside of their household to do so easily and securely, while also paying a little more. Over the next few weeks, two new features will be rolling out and tested for members in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru:

Add an additional member: Standard and Premium plan members can add sub-accounts for up to two people they don’t live with – each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password – for a price: CLP 2,380 in Chile, 2 $.99 in Costa Rica and PEN 7.9 in Peru;

Transfer Profile to New Account: Members of the Basic, Standard, and Premium plans can give people who share their account the ability to transfer their profile information to either a new account or a sub-account for Extra members—while retaining the same history, list and personal recommendations.

Claim: Sooner or later, Netflix is tightening the thumbscrews in all markets to get more customers — and more revenue.
