Netflix and more: Google plans video apps for Android Automotive

I like Android Automotive because theoretically, it is very simple that many apps for the infotainment system will come quickly. Developers only need to customize their apps for Android Auto and provide a native AAOS version.

There is also a dedicated Google Play Store if you already own a car with the platform (e.g. Polestar 2). However, Google is still a bit strict when it comes to the type of app and is currently expanding the range of options.

Google will soon allow video apps

What I’ve been missing, for example, video apps. They can be very practical at the charging station. While there’s now a YouTube app for the XC40 Recharge and a browser for the Polestar, it’s all half-hearted so far.

The YouTube app does not exist for the Polestar and in general, how about Netflix, Disney+ and Co., there is not only YouTube. That comes if the operators of the streaming services want to take this step into the car.

A new page for developers explains that Google will soon be unlocking video apps. The car must of course be parked for these apps to work, it will not be possible to watch videos while driving (distracts the driver).

No video apps announced yet

I’m curious to see if the big providers will use it. Specific apps have not yet been announced, but if one starts, the others will surely follow. I’m hoping primarily for Netflix and Disney+.

But what I also noticed is that I will be testing a car with Android Automotive again in a few days: The selection of apps is still modest. But that can change quickly because more and more manufacturers are switching to Google’s OS.
