According to the latest reports, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will attend the opening ceremony of Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory with Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday.
A government spokesman said the prime minister would deliver a welcome speech at the groundbreaking ceremony. On Tuesday afternoon, Musk will personally deliver the first Model Y cars from the factory to customers. According to the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs, Minister Robert Habeck also wants to participate in the opening ceremony.
The $5 billion plants are Tesla’s first in Europe, and it plans to produce 500,000 battery-electric vehicles a year. Musk had intended to start production last summer.
But approvals have been delayed as Tesla added a battery factory to its car-making application, fueling environmental opposition and causing delays. On March 4, the Brandenburg government gave final approval.
