Capcom has updated in these minutes the information on the next upgrade of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 7 for PS5 and Xbox Series X | S, adding some details on the free update and the transfer of saves.
In some new tweets from the official account it is highlighted how the saves and all the progress will transfer from the versions currently in use to the next-gen ones, that is to say, PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X | S, remaining inside of the same family of consul. The free upgrade is confirmed, meaning there will be no price to pay for the operation in question.
Players who own the physical edition of RE2, 3, and/or 7 can upgrade at no additional cost via PS4 to PS5 digital upgrade or Xbox Smart Delivery. Please note that your console will need a disk drive to continue using the physical editions of these games.

Along with the core games, any DLC owned for Resident Evil 2, 3 and 7 will also automatically carry over to the new next-gen version for PS5 and Xbox Series X | S. Note that the upgrade applies to both digital and disc versions: in the latter case, those who own the disc games will get the next-gen versions digitally, but it will still be necessary to keep the disc in the drive in order to use the new versions.
Next-gen physical editions aren’t planned right now, but all three game will be available digitally on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. As noted above, PS4 and Xbox One discs, and all PS4 and Xbox One digital editions of the game, will also be eligible for an upgrade.

Capcom also explained that it does not have plans for the release of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 7 in the PS5 version and Xbox Series X | S in the physical edition, for the moment. The games in question will therefore be digital-only, available for purchase or for a free upgrade.
